Unfortunately this method can be expensive and involve a lot of effort in some cases.  For more details on this method see our dedicated page: Method 2: Vole damage – How to prevent it completely using wire baskets

Method 3:  Poison/Bait

03a vole poisonPoison is often an effective method for getting rid of voles and moles in a short period. Cost and effort are relatively low compared to other methods. And if so, how?

Method 6:  Vibration Devices for getting rid of moles and voles

This can unfortunately also become quite an expensive approach to mole and vole control … unless you are only trying to protect a small area or a few specific plants. (On the plus side, ongoing costs and effort are close to zero … so you only have to fork out the money once. Thereafter you will be free of voles and moles for years to come.)  Compared to other methods, vibration devices are easy to set up. They are safe with kids and pets and generally friendly to the environment. For more details on this method see our dedicated page: Method 6: Moles in yard – How to get rid of them with vibration devices

Method 7:  Sound Devices

07a getting rid of voles and moles via sound devices near vole holesSound devices can be an effective vole and mole deterrent if spaced at the right distance. Unlike most other methods, sound devices are easy to set up. They are generally friendly to animals and the environment, and safe to humans and pets. For more details on this method see our dedicated page: Method 7: Can sound devices near vole holes get rid of the animals?

Method 8:  Repellents

08a mole and vole repellentsMole and vole repellents are an effective way of getting rid of moles and voles … but only if used thoroughly and frequently. Method 9:  Wild Predators: natural vole and mole killers

09a natural mole killerMany wild predators are excellent vole and mole killers. They are also one of the most natural ways to control mole and vole populations. This method is safe, low effort and low cost. Unfortunately though, wild predators alone will never get rid of all the rodents. Hence you will still need to use additional mole control methods described on this site. For more details on this method see our dedicated page: Method 9: Natural mole killer – can wild predators help your rodent problem?”

Method 10:  How to catch voles with Domestic Predators

But if you have a cat or dog already anyway … you can very easily turn it into a vole and mole killer … supporting your mission to get rid of the rodents … in a natural, environmentally friendly and safe way. For more details on this method see our dedicated page: Method 10: How to catch voles using your cat or dog

Method 11:  How to get rid of moles and voles using Flooding

However, this method is rarely completely effective especially for larger areas and rodent populations. Even if it does work, it doesn’t take long for the animals to come back a few weeks later. The environmental impact is debatable. For more details on this method see our dedicated page: Method 11: How to kill moles and voles using only water

Method 12:  Soil Amendment

12a vole and mole deterrent soil amendmentGravel mixed into the soil is an effective long-term approach to getting rid of voles and moles. It’s friendly to the environment and animals, as well as safe to children and pets. Unfortunately, it is probably the most expensive and highest effort way to deter voles and moles. For more details on this method, see our dedicated page: Method 12: Vole and mole deterrent made from gravel

Method 13:  Singing Bottle

13a natural mole repellentThe Singing Bottle is a natural mole repellent that is very easy to implement. This method doesn’t cost anything other than your time. It is very friendly to animals and the environment. Unfortunately this method does not always work … especially in areas that have longer periods without wind. In many cases it makes sense to combine “Singing Bottles” with professional sound devices as described in Method 7. For more details on the Singing Bottle method see our dedicated page: Method 13: Natural mole repellent made at home: The “Singing Bottle”

Method 14:  Habitat Modification

14a natural field mouse repellent by habitat modificationHabit modification can play an important part in your getting rid of voles and moles. It is never 100% guarantee and therefore best used as a complimentary rodent control method. It is usually cheap but often requires additional ongoing effort. For more details on this method see our dedicated page: Method 14: Habitat modification as natural field mouse repellent

Method 15:  How to get rid of voles and moles using Burrow Sealing

15a field vole control via burrow sealingThis method for getting rid of voles and moles works best if done thoroughly over a long time. But even then success is not a guarantee. For more details on this method, see our dedicated page: Method 15: Field vole control – does filling the holes & tunnels help?

Method 16:  Rodent torch

16a how to kill a mole with rodent torchOnce you have learned how to kill a mole with this device, you can be rodent free within hours. However, this effective device for getting rid of voles and moles comes at its price (>$1000). It is not friendly to the environment and requires very strict safety guidelines. (It is actually forbidden in many places.) For more details on this method see our dedicated page: Method 16: How to kill a mole with a rodent torch

Method 17:  Fumigation

17a killing moles and voles via fumigationIn some cases, fumigation can be an effective short-term method for getting rid of voles and moles. However, there is no guarantee … especially if the affected area is big. This method generally works better with voles than with moles. In any case, this approach to killing moles does not work long-term as the rodents tend to come back quickly. A key advantage of this method is that it’s is cheap, fast and easy to do. Fumigation is one of the least environmentally friendly mole and vole control methods … and is consequently prohibited by law in many places. For more details on this method see our dedicated page: Method 17: Killing moles and voles using the fumigation method

Method 18:  Shooting

18a how to kill voles with weaponsUnless you master this method very well, this is unlikely to be a successful method for getting rid of voles and moles. This is because these animals are active at night and they largely live below the surface. Even if you manage to shoot a few, their high reproductive rate will ensure population to re-grow fast. Shooting rodents is hence only suitable as an additional effort to complement other methods described here. For more details on this method see our dedicated page: Method 18: How to kill voles, moles and gophers using weapons

According to Veterinarians garlic IS VERY toxic to dogs – even a small amount.

Thanks for this comment. I have never heard of it. We have two dogs (Swiss Mountain Dogs) and they have never shown the slightest interest in our garlic. (As you may imagine we have garlic everywhere 😉 ). So maybe you try putting a clove in front of your dog(s) and if it’s not interested, this could be a good way of getting rid of voles and moles even in your case.
