Summary:  “Friendly” methods

All of below 12 methods for getting rid of field mice, voles and moles are “friendly”. What we mean by this is “friendly to animals and the environment” …  and “safe to humans and pets“. The good news is that there are several “friendly” ways of getting rid of field mice that are actually more effective and cheaper than some “unfriendly” methods. Besides “friendliness”, we have rated each method in the following areas: Effectiveness short-term, effectiveness long-term,  cost and effort required. Below table gives a first overview over the 12 methods. This is then followed by a summary for each method for more details.

Method 1:  Garlic Barrier

01a vole control using garlicThis is one of the best methods for getting rid of field mice, voles and moles: It is not only effective immediately … but also lasts for years. Unlike most other approaches, it’s almost for free, does no harm to animals and the environment and is totally safe for pets and children. You do need to put in a few hours of effort once … but thereafter no further work will need to be done at all. Method 2:  Wire Baskets

It is probably the most effective and reliable method for getting rid of field mice … both short and long term. It is totally safe to children and pets … and one of the few methods where no harm is done to any animals. Method 4:  Live Trapping

Live trapping can be an effective low-cost methods for getting rid of field mice and moles in an environmentally friendly way. Method 6:  Vibration Devices to get rid of field mice

This can unfortunately also become quite an expensive approach to mole and vole control … unless you are only trying to protect a small area or a few specific plants. (On the plus side, ongoing costs and effort are close to zero … so you only have to fork out the money once. Thereafter you will be free of voles and moles for years to come.)  Compared to other methods, vibration devices are easy to set up. Method 7:  Sound Devices for getting rid of field mice and moles

Unfortunately they are also one of the most expensive methods for getting rid of field mice. (Unless where the area is small or only a few plants need to be protected.) Unlike most other methods, sound devices are easy to set up. Method 8:  Mole, vole and field mouse repellents

08a mole and vole repellentsMole and vole repellents are an effective method to control these rodents … but only if used thoroughly and frequently. Unfortunately this often means high cost and high effort. Method 9:  Wild Predators

09a natural mole killerMany wild predators are excellent vole and mole killers. They are also one of the most natural and environmentally friendly mole control methods. This approach is safe, low effort and low cost. Unfortunately though, wild predators alone will never get rid of all the rodents. Hence you will still need to use additional mole control methods described on this site. Method 10:  Domestic Predators

So you will still need to use additional methods for getting rid of field mice, voles and moles. Method 12:  Soil Amendment

12a vole and mole deterrent soil amendmentGravel mixed into the soil is an effective long-term approach to getting rid of field mice, voles and moles. It’s friendly to the environment and animals, as well as safe to children and pets. Method 13:  Singing Bottle

13a natural mole repellentThe Singing Bottle is a natural mole repellent that is very easy to implement. This method doesn’t cost anything other than your time. It is very friendly to animals and the environment. Unfortunately this method does not always work … especially in areas that have longer periods without wind. In many cases it makes sense to combine “Singing Bottles” with professional sound devices as described in Method 7. Method 14:  Habitat Modification

It is never 100% guarantee and therefore best used as a complimentary rodent control method. Method 15:  Burrow Sealing

On the plus side, this approach is low cost and very easy to do. It is also very friendly to animals and the environment and safe for children and pets.   1. Garlic method : does garlic spread and will it survive weed control in lawns ?

      Hi Leon, the answers are YES and NO. I.e., yes it does spread and hence is a great method for getting rid of field mice and moles. But no, weed control is likely to harm the garlic plant, especially if it’s chemically based. (On some methods of weed control, the plant will die, but the clove remains and regrows … though this is not a give.)
