Summary: Long-term methods
All of below 6 methods focus on getting rid of moles and voles long-term. This means you apply the method once … and then don’t have to bother doing much/anything in the future. While getting rid of moles and voles for good sounds ideal in many ways … the downside is that most of these methods (except Method 1) are relatively expensive. Below table gives a first overview over the 6 methods. This is then followed by a summary for each method.
This is one of the best methods for getting rid of moles and voles: It is not only effective immediately … but also lasts for years. Unlike most other approaches, it’s almost for free, does no harm to animals and the environment and is totally safe for pets and children. You do need to put in a few hours of effort once … but thereafter no further work will need to be done at all. Mole and vole damage can be completely prevented using wire baskets. It is probably the most effective and reliable method for getting rid of moles and voles … both short and long term. It is totally safe to children and pets … and one of the few methods where no harm is done to any animals. Unfortunately this method can be expensive and involve a lot of effort in some cases. If set up correctly, vibration devices can be a good way for getting rid of moles and voles. This can unfortunately also become quite an expensive approach to mole and vole control … unless you are only trying to protect a small area or a few specific plants. (On the plus side, ongoing costs and effort are close to zero … so you only have to fork out the money once. Thereafter you will be free of voles and moles for years to come.) Compared to other methods, vibration devices are easy to set up. They are safe with kids and pets and generally friendly to the environment. Sound devices can be an effective vole and mole deterrent if spaced at the right distance. Unfortunately they are also one of the most expensive ways of getting rid of moles and voles. (Unless where the area is small or only a few plants need to be protected.) Unlike most other methods, sound devices are easy to set up. They are generally friendly to animals and the environment, and safe to humans and pets. Gravel mixed into the soil is an effective long-term approach to getting rid of moles and voles. It’s friendly to the environment and animals, as well as safe to children and pets. Unfortunately, it is probably the most expensive and highest effort way to deter voles and moles. Habit modification can play an important part in your getting rid of moles and voles. It is never 100% guarantee and therefore best used as a complimentary rodent control method.
